Governments around the world lose significant amounts of revenue every year as a result of the illegal diversion of low-grade or tax-free transit fuels into premium grade domestic fuels. To solve such problem, a classical colorimetric petroleum marker was used to identify fuels or detect any adulteration via color change upon the extraction of fuel followed by addition of developer. In our research group, we aim to create a new marker system for petrol authentication. We replace complicated lab-based solvent extraction procedure with a bio derived marker detectable using paper-based vapor sensing system for easy, on site and solventless process.
